Trying something new.
Introducing my new Substack, a little corner of the internet where I share my thoughts and experiences as a founder and woman in business.
Welcome to On the Rise—a weekly newsletter talking about founder life, navigating the business world, and women’s empowerment. Created by entrepreneur Allison Luvera. ✨
Hi friends.
I’m so excited for my first foray into Substack.
Though it’s only now taking shape, I’ve been wanting to find time for this for a while. Largely because after nearly two decades of climbing the corporate ladder, then launching my own business in a male-dominated industry, a couple of things have become clear.
1- Women are in uncharted territory (in business and beyond).
It’s the best—and most complicated—time in history to be a woman.
We have rights and opportunities that our grandmothers didn’t have and the freedom to design our own paths in life. But with this comes challenges.
We haven’t quite figured out how to navigate this new normal, and society still hasn’t let go of deeply ingrained ideas of what a woman should be. Sometimes it feels like every time we take two steps forward, we take one step back.
For me, one of the best ways to cope is to share and connect with other women who are experiencing the same things.
2- There is a growing divide between the conversations working women are having and the media narrative aimed at them.
While my friends and I discuss everything from office politics and mid-career pivots, to personal style and fertility, popular women’s platforms seem stuck in a trivial loop of vague advice and clickbait stories.
I feel we are lacking a forum to discuss the real things we encounter daily.
Personally, I need all the help I can get navigating the rise to the top in business (while still maintaining some semblance of a personal life!) and I just don’t find the topics that interest me covered in a productive way by today’s media.
I created On the Rise with these things in mind. I want to spark thought-provoking dialogue among ambitious women like myself about the real things we are thinking about daily.
Now that I’ve shared my “why”, outlining a few basics of the newsletter below. ⬇️
Who is the Author?
First things first, let me introduce myself!
I’m Allison Luvera, an executive-turned-entrepreneur who is best known for my current role as the Co-Founder and CEO of Juliet, an award-winning sustainable wine brand (you may have seen us in the press here, here, or here).
Before launching my business, I had 15 years of experience across the media and consumer goods sectors. I’ve been lucky enough to work at some of the most iconic brands in the world, including Vogue, InStyle, Perrier Jouët Champagne, Tequila Avion, and The Glenlivet, and I hold a BS from Boston College and an MBA from The Wharton School.
Professional experience aside, I’ve always been passionate about lifting up women, and previously held leadership positions in the women’s rights space including VP, Board of Directors for UN Women USA-NY.
I don’t have a lot of spare time these days—I work 24/7 most weeks on Juliet—but when I can carve out moments for myself, I love to ski, travel, and spend time with family. I’m also attempting to learn German (my fiancé is from Dusseldorf) and have been working on publishing a family cookbook for two years now!
Why “On the Rise”?
I think the rise of women is the biggest (and most exciting) socioeconomic story of the century, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I get to be a part of that shift. We are all women on the rise, so let’s talk about it!
What Will It Cover?
Any topic that resonates with women in business is fair game.
My goal is to write at least one edition per month that includes thoughtful commentary on a main topic—either an issue affecting women in the workplace, learnings from my experience as a founder, or an inspiring story or interview—plus more frequent round ups of interesting stuff that’s caught my attention during the course of each week.
I want to keep the discussion as authentic as possible—no fluffy stuff here. In short, if a topic is showing up in group chats with our closest girlfriends and colleagues, it’s something I want to explore.
Who Should Read It?
I hope this speaks to a community of ambitious women who are breaking barriers, while achieving personal and professional success on their own terms.
If that applies to you, please subscribe and join the conversation.
